Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) pharmacy residency programs at OhioHealth are 24-month programs that offer combined PGY1 and PGY2 residency in addition to a Master of Science (MS) degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences with specialization in Health-System Pharmacy Administration from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy.
Program Overviews
Programs offered at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital and OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital — build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes in the delivery of patient-centered care and in pharmacy operational services.
A PGY2 health-system pharmacy administration and leadership residency builds upon PGY1 residency graduates’ competence in the delivery of patient-centered care and in pharmacy operational services to prepare residents who can assume high level managerial, supervisory, and leadership responsibilities. Areas of competence emphasized during the program include safe and effective medication-use systems, quality assurance and improvement, the management of human resources, the management of financial resources, use of technology, and advanced leadership. The residency lays the foundation for continued growth in management and leadership skills. Upon graduation, residents are prepared for a clinical or operational management/supervisory role in a variety of work settings.
- PGY1
The 24-month Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) residency program at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, and OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital is tailored to fulfill residents’ individual interests and goals within ASHP accreditation standards.
PGY1 requirements must be accomplished in the first 15 months of residency. A variety of elective inpatient and ambulatory administrative experiences are available based on resident interest. Residents will complete academic training at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in years one and two, while participating in both clinical and administrative rotations.

Didactic work at The Ohio State University affords opportunities for networking with the Ohio State alumni and Latiolais Leadership Program. Residents will gain exposure to a true health system environment as part of the OhioHealth care system, which is comprised of 15 hospitals and over 200 ambulatory care sites. This exposure to health-system management differentiates our residency program.
HSPAL residents are active members of the leadership team and pursue activities that will collectively impact the practice of pharmacy. We believe this experience creates the greatest opportunity for residents to make a significant impact after their residency in the environment of health-system pharmacy and accountable care organization.

OhioHealth Doctors Hospital
Located just outside central Columbus, this 260-bed community teaching hospital is a TJC-accredited chest pain center with over 80,000 emergency department visits and the 5th largest osteopathic training program in the US.
OhioHealth Grant Medical Center
Located in downtown Columbus, this 640-bed teaching hospital — with the busiest Level I Trauma Center in the state — is recognized by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacy (ASHP) as one of 12 programs offering continuous training since 1963.
OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital
Mansfield Hospital is a 326-bed hospital that is the largest site for the six surrounding counties, a level III-N trauma center with 52,000 emergency department visits per year, nationally ranked heart and vascular care, and one of the busiest oncology infusion centers in the system.
OhioHealth Marion General Hospital
Located north of Columbus, Marion General Hospital is a 170-bed community hospital that has served Marion and the surrounding communities since 1920. Our site sees approximately 50,000 ED visits annually, is a certified primary stroke center, and has recently opened the Marion Cancer Center, allowing for expansion of our oncology and infusion services. The pharmacy residency program was established in 2016.
OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital
Caring for patients since 1892, this 1,059-bed teaching hospital located in Columbus is also OhioHealth’s largest with a pharmacy department recognized for more than 50 years of success in pharmacy residency training.
